Cataracts occur when the lens of the eye becomes cloudy, most often as a result of age. When left untreated, cataracts may become progressively worse, eventually even leading to blindness. The only true cure for cataracts is surgery, in which the clouded lens is removed and replaced with a clear artificial lens.
Traditional cataract surgery involves using a blade to create a small incision in the cornea through which instruments can be inserted to break up and remove the cloudy lens, then insert a new lens. Laser cataract surgery, also called bladeless cataract surgery, uses a laser for all steps of the surgery, which has a number of benefits for the patient.
If you have noticed your vision becoming progressively cloudier and suspect you may have cataracts, please call Kirk Eye Center at 708-397-8114 today to schedule your appointment.
How Is Laser Cataract Surgery Performed?
Here at Kirk Eye Center, we use the CATALYS femtosecond laser system, which allows us unprecedented preciseness when performing cataract surgery. The CATALYS 3D imaging system creates a map of your eye that we can use to customize your surgery to a degree impossible with traditional cataract surgery that uses a handheld blade.
Bladeless cataract surgery does not require general anesthesia. Instead, your eye will be numbed with drops - no needles required! - and you will be given a sedative to ensure that you are calm and relaxed during the procedure.
During surgery, your cloudy lens will be broken up and taken out, then replaced with a new intraocular lens (IOL). We offer a range of different IOL types that can correct vision problems, and we will discuss these options before your surgery during your consultation.
After your surgery is complete, you’ll rest at our facility for some time before having someone take you home. You will not be able to drive after this procedure, so if you don’t have anyone to take you home, you should call a taxi or ride sharing service.
What Are the Benefits of Bladeless Cataract Surgery?
Bladeless cataract surgery has many advantages, the main ones being increased precision and quicker recovery time. It has been shown that using a laser is approximately 10x more accurate than using a blade, and recovery is usually relatively quick with minimal discomfort.
Other advantages of laser cataract surgery include:
- Reduced risk of complications and infection
- Treatment that is better customized to your unique eye
- Astigmatism can be corrected at the same time
- Better placement of premium IOLs
During your consultation, we will examine your eyes, listen to your goals, and help determine whether traditional or laser cataract surgery is better for you. We will also help you choose the best IOL for your needs. Some people are fine with needing glasses after cataract surgery, while others would prefer to correct their vision through a premium IOL.
