Does LASIK Eye Surgery Work for Astigmatism?

LASIK & Cataract Surgeons serving Gurnee, River Forest & Chicago

LASIK eye surgery can correct refractive vision errors, including astigmatism, in the right candidate. Most of our patients with mild to moderate astigmatism are able to achieve 20/20 vision or higher with LASIK surgery. If your astigmatism is particularly severe, you may still be able to have LASIK performed successfully, but you may not end up with perfect 20/20 vision.Closeup of eye next to vision chart in preparation for LASIK eye surgery

If you have astigmatism and are interested in LASIK eye surgery, please call Kirk Eye Center today at 708-397-8114 to schedule your complimentary consultation at one of our offices in Gurnee or River Forest.

How Does LASIK Correct Astigmatism?

Astigmatism occurs when the cornea is an oblong rather than round shape, which in turn leads to blurry vision. LASIK vision correction surgery works by reshaping the cornea into a rounder, more symmetric shape so that light can refract more precisely.

We use a state-of-the-art laser system to achieve the best results possible in the safest and most efficient manner. LASIK takes only around 5 minutes per eye to perform, and is painless, precise, and effective.

If you have a high degree of astigmatism, we recommend discussing your options with one of our ophthalmologists. It is possible to perform LASIK even if you have severe astigmatism, but there may be a higher risk of side effects and you may not be able to achieve perfect vision after one treatment. It is also possible to have further LASIK treatment to enhance your results in some cases.

Are You a Good Candidate for LASIK to Correct Astigmatism?

The best candidates for LASIK treatment of astigmatism:

  • Have astigmatism of up to 6 diopters
  • Have otherwise healthy eyes
  • Are in good general health
  • Do not have significantly dry eyes
  • Do not have larger than normal pupils

The best way to find out if LASIK vision correction treatment is right for you is to visit Kirk Eye Center for an in-person consultation. We will examine your eyes, listen to your goals, and help you find the best treatment plan. If you have severe astigmatism, we will let you know if we think LASIK is a good option for you or not, and we’ll make sure to go over any potential risks and answer all of your questions.

If for some reason you are not an ideal candidate for LASIK eye surgery, we offer a number of other vision correction procedures, including:

  • PRK (photorefractive keratectomy)
  • Implantable contact lenses

Our goal is to help you achieve the best vision possible using the latest technology. We believe that great vision should be accessible to everyone, which is why we also offer financing plans and seasonal specials to help more people afford LASIK surgery and other treatments. We’ll be happy to work with you to find a treatment plan and financing option that fits your budget.
