LASIK vision correction surgery is extremely effective and popular, but many people are understandably concerned about side effects. Your vision is an important sense, and no one wants to lose it due to side effects of elective eye surgery.
Luckily, most potential LASIK side effects are minor and short-lived. It is incredibly rare for people who undergo LASIK with a reputable, experienced eye surgeon to suffer from long-term, serious side effects.
Here at Kirk Eye Center, we have been performing LASIK vision correction surgery for decades, and have never had a serious complication. We have a very high patient satisfaction rate, and most of our patients end up with 20/20 vision or better. We always make sure that our patients are good candidates before performing LASIK, which dramatically reduces the risk of complications.

Common Short-Term LASIK Side Effects
Immediately after LASIK surgery, you will likely experience some side effects. These will usually disappear on their own after a few days. For some patients, certain side effects may last longer, but typically will gradually get better over time.
Side effects from LASIK can include:
- Glares and haloes
- Light sensitivity
- Blurry vision
Infection can also occur, but this is very rare as long as you follow all of your doctor’s recovery instructions. If you do experience signs of an infection, notify us immediately so that we can take the proper steps to treat it.
How Can You Avoid LASIK Side Effects?
Unfortunately, you will most likely experience some temporary side effects during your LASIK recovery. This is normal, and nothing to worry about. The best way to avoid long-term side effects is to visit an experienced, ethical eye surgeon who cares about your eye health and your results. Your chances of complications from LASIK go up substantially if you:
- Have dry eyes
- Have thin corneas
- Have issues with your eye health
A good LASIK surgeon will make sure that you are a great candidate for the procedure before proceeding. If you are not a good candidate for LASIK, we offer alternative vision correction procedures such as:
- Visian ICL: Implantable contact lenses are reversible and safe for patients with dry eyes or severe nearsightedness.
- PRK: PRK is the predecessor to LASIK, and is just as effective. Recovery time is longer because the entire surface layer of the cornea is removed, but results are just as good. Most importantly, PRK can be performed on patients with dry eyes or thin corneas.
Our eye doctors will perform a comprehensive examination during your consultation and will let you know which procedure you are the best candidate for. They will answer your questions, tell you why they recommend a particular procedure for you, and give you details about why you are or are not a good candidate for LASIK.
