As we age, our skin starts to sag, and this includes the skin on the eyelids. The upper eyelids begin to droop, and bags form under the eyes due to fat pads slipping forward. Our experienced eyelid surgeons perform both upper and lower blepharoplasty (also known as eyelid surgery) to help you achieve a more youthful, brighter, and more awake appearance.
If you are interested in an upper or lower blepharoplasty, don't hesitate to contact Kirk Eye Center at 708-397-8114 today to schedule your consultation. We serve patients in the greater Chicago area, including River Forest, Oak Park, Cicero, and Naperville.
What Is Blepharoplasty?
Blepharoplasty is the medical term for surgery of the eyelids. Eyelid surgery is generally a cosmetic procedure designed to help lift and contour the upper eyelids or reduce bags and wrinkles under the eyes. A blepharoplasty can have an amazing effect on your appearance, helping you to appear younger and less tired.
- Upper Blepharoplasty: Upper eyelid surgery trims away excess skin and fat in order to reverse sagging and drooping.
- Lower Blepharoplasty: Lower eyelid surgery removes large bags and helps to smooth wrinkles underneath the eyes.
These procedures can be combined if you have both sagging upper eyelids and large bags under the eyes. We will examine your eyes during your consultation and let you know if you would benefit from one or both of these blepharoplasty surgeries.
We also offer BOTOX® Cosmetic to help non-surgically treat crow's feet, forehead lines, and frown lines. In some cases Botox can be combined with blepharoplasty for more comprehensive results.
The Blepharoplasty Procedure
Eyelid surgery is generally performed under either local anesthetic or IV sedation. It is an outpatient procedure that we perform in our own accredited surgery center, allowing for cost-effectiveness and convenience for our patients.
Following surgery, you will need to rest for a while in our recovery area, where we will closely monitor you. You will need to have arrangements for a ride home, as your vision will be blurry for a time.
Recovery from blepharoplasty is fairly easy. You will experience some swelling and there may some discomfort, but there is usually very little pain and most patients find recovery very tolerable. You should take some time off of work to allow yourself a sufficient recovery period.
Are You A Blepharoplasty Candidate?
In general, good blepharoplasty candidates:
- Are in good health
- Are non-smokers
- Have sagging upper eyelids or bags under the eyes
- Have sufficient eyelid skin
- Understand the potential risks
- Have realistic expectations
If you have a chronic medical condition, be sure to let your blepharoplasty surgeon know, and if necessary obtain clearance from your primary doctor to undergo elective cosmetic surgery. In addition, if you are a smoker, you will need to be able to quit for at least a month prior to your surgery. Smoking greatly increases the risks of complications and impedes the healing process.
How Long Do Blepharoplasty Results Last?
Unfortunately, nothing can stop the natural aging process, and gravity will continue to take its toll on your skin. However, blepharoplasty results essentially turn back the clock on your eyes, and last for a very long time. Depending on your daily habits, results can last anywhere from ten years to a lifetime.
Factors that influence how long blepharoplasty results last include:
- How well you take care of your skin
Non-smokers who lead a healthy lifestyle and protect their skin from the sun usually have the longest-lasting results. Genetics also play a role, but your lifestyle can make a big difference.
